bundesfussballThe European Cup is in full swing in Austria and Switzerland and the German national team has made it into the semi-finals. The mood is reminiscent of the World Cup, which Germany hosted just two years ago.

arenaWith the Germany National team doing so well the public viewing areas in most cities are starting to become more well visited and in little towns like mine, neighbors are gathering together every night to grill and watch the games together.? It’s a special time, quite apart from the football (or soccer, as we Americans call it) and is this podcast I just wanted to give you a small idea of what’s going on.

For the next podcast I’m taking a poll about the topic, either NUDITY IN GERMANY or NATIONALISM/NAZIS IN GERMANY. It’s your choice, so please vote.

Episode 17: German Names

Author: Taural

In this episode I talk about German names, some of which can sound very unusual to a native English speaker. You’ll get a chance to hear about some of the most popular boy’s and girls names over the past few years and I talk about German laws and practices regarding the naming of your children.

It’s been a long while since I put out a fresh podcast, but I’ve been surprised to see my subscriber stats go up rather than down. Just goes to show you, the less I say, the more popular I am :-)

I’d like to especially thank Sigrun Bjork from Iceland for sending me a very nice e-mail!

As always, I’m very keen to hear about your thoughts, comments, corrections and questions about the topics I’ve covered as well as anything that you may be interested in learning about Germany? You can contact me here or add me on skype: tauralstravles

taural and zoeYes it’s been awhile, but I’m glad to finally be able to bring you another episode of the myGermany podcast. This time I’ll be reflecting on my experiences of being back in the States for the first time in more than 3 years. Sometimes it’s the not so obvious things which can sneak up on you and make you realize that “you’re not in Kansas anymore,Toto” to paraphrase Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz.

Also wanted to let you know about the overnight sleepers that the German train company (Deutsche Bahn) has in operation. These are a great alternative to the typical train services and can really be quite comfortable and pleasant way to travel…you also save on hotel costs :-) !

And for those of you interested in finding out a little more about what it’s like moving to Germany for the first time, check out NewFrank’s blog. There’s lots of good articles and it is most certainly well worth a visit.

Big thanks to Haywood and Vanessa for the recent comments!
